Praise The Lord Who … “Satisfies Your Desires With Good Things”

Psalm 103:1-5 says this:

Praise the Lord, my soul;
    all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the Lord, my soul,
    and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
    and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
    so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Verse 5 is what gets me:  satisfies your desires with good things.

We typically view our desires and God’s design as in lifelong conflict.

Most of the time, it seems, we desire all the wrong things.  Wrong relationships.  Wrong substances.  Wrong sources of satisfaction.  Wrong entertainment.  The struggle for many of us is yielding our desires to his design.

Yet Psalm 103:5 promises something truly glorious:  through a “long walk in the same direction,” those massively small steps of daily obedience, something miraculous happens.  Our desires move from self-centered to God-ordained.  We stop desiring what opposes God and begin desiring what unites us with Him.

We’re satisfied with his good things rather than our easy things.  His plan becomes our wants.

We stop obeying reluctantly and begin obeying naturally.

And his design becomes our desire.
