Writing Your Prayers

Earlier this week, I received this email from a Good Shepherd friend.  The email came in response to a section of Sunday’s sermon on Psalm 13 in which I mentioned that for the past 18 months I have been writing the majority of my prayers.

(If you think that is somehow less spiritual than speaking, whispering, or thinking your prayers, consider how many written prayers are in Scripture.)

Anyway, here’s what my friend said:

Thanks for sharing about writing to God. I have never felt that I have been good at praying for myself or anyone really. After Sunday’s service, I decided to write to God and maybe that will allow me to be more open and honest with Him. I wrote to Him yesterday morning asking Him to help me better navigate the feelings I have, help me to be a better spouse, help me be a better parent, and help me become the best self I can be. By the end of the day, an answer to that prayer came. It wasn’t the answer that I wanted to hear and the answer definitely hurt! But looking back today what I asked for yesterday, I know it was the answer to help me begin working on the things I asked. Again, thanks for sharing about writing to God! I am going to continue to write to Him!

Practice his presence … write away.
